Over the years I have put together some tutorials and guides to help students with first year algebra. Check back throughout the school year when you something clarified. I hope these will help you as they have helped others.
These algebra tutorials review everything you should know when you begin algebra in the fall. Much of this material should be review, however some of it may be all new to you. Take your time and go over the tutorials carefully. This will assure that you are prepared and ready for algebra. Just click on the heading of the tutorial you wish to review.
Tutorial 1 - Real Numbers This tutorial is all about real numbers — all the different types of numbers you will need to get the job done.
Tutorial 2 - Properties We need to know the properties of numbers in order to work with the expressions, equations, functions, and formulas that we use in algebra.
Tutorial 3 - Order of Operations In algebra order of operations will be more meaningful than ever, as you will experience many, many problems with parentheses, multiple operations, and exponents.
Tutorial 4 - Fractions Fractions are very important in algebra, and a really solid understanding of fractions is a major step toward being prepared for algebra class.
Tutorial 5 - Signed Numbers There are lots of negatives used in algebra, so this is a good time to review all the things you need to know when you are working with signed numbers.
Tutorial 6 - Equations You need to be sure you are comfortable working with variables and equations. In this tutorial we will go over all the basics of algebraic expressions and equations.
Tutorial 7 - Math Symbols Mathematics uses its own language and much of it is written in symbols. I will often use them on the board during class. Use this glossary to become familiar with them before you come to class in August.
I have put together a series of animated "whiteboard style" tutorials which I call "Here's How." They are are quick 10-15 minute lessons designed to help you understand key concepts in your course. These are step-by-step animations that walk and talk you through a variety of concepts and topics.
The Help Menu has Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, and Precalculus choices. If there is not a Here's How for what you need, let me know and I will create it.
I hope my "Here's How" Tutorials will be a help to you in your understanding of "how to do" math.
