Don't buy a calculator for your student to use in algebra class until you know exactly which calculator will be used in the classroom.
Fort Bend ISD is beginning a changeover to the new Texas Instruments Nspire CX calculators. If your student's school is one that will be using the new calculator this year, then you want to make sure that you buy the exact same calculator for your student's home use and practice.
For years the standard calculator in Fort Bend has been the TI-84+ graphing calculator. But it is an older technology and not capable of many of the things the new Nspire can do. In addition to having many more features, the classroom Nspires will be interconnected with a wireless network for complete communication between the teacher's computer and the student calculators. This will allow for many class activities and assessments to be completely calculator based.
I used these calculators in my classroom last year at the FBISD GT Academy. The Nspire is an excellent teaching tool, and I am pleased the district is making the transition.
To learn exactly which calculator your student's campus will be using this coming fall, contact
Ms. Stephanie Williams, Secondary Math Coordinator at 281-634-1253 or by email at Stephanie.firstname.lastname@example.org.
The Nspire is available at the big-box and office supply stores as well as online from Amazon and other vendors.
